Congratulations, you are on your way to your first meeting with an estate planning attorney. Your intention is to establish a trust. Be certain to discuss relevant documents to bring to your meeting with your estate planning attorney. Thinking ahead will save you time and money.

Here are some examples of what you may be asked to provide:

  • Names and addresses of your family members
  • The name and address of the trustee and successor trustee
  • If required, the name and address of chosen guardians for your children
  • A detailed list of specific gifts you want to establish in your trust
  • A list of sentimental personal possessions that includes family heirlooms such as jewelry or antiques
  • Bank account details including account numbers and the locations of safe deposit boxes.
  • Information regarding stocks, bonds, IRAs, government benefits and profit sharing plans
  • A copy of the actual insurance policies and beneficiaries If relevant, prenuptial or postnuptial agreements
  • A list of debts owed, including amounts and to whom they are owed.
  • The past three tax returns
